Greetings - Welcome to My Wood

Image of "High Poly Spanish Forest"-depicting my wood, by GDJ,! Welcome to my wood—where meaning dwells in the everyday stuff of life and ideas linger in the fire. It's doubtful we'll end on the path from which we begin. I started owlinthewood  as a place to collect my research projects, which began with diet and food due to an illness I contracted in 2009.

Food and health

The first stop was Michael Pollan's book, In Defense of Food, which launched me on a path through the Weston Price Foundation, Nourishing Traditions, the SCD Diet and the Gaps Diet. Lately, I've dipped my toes into the stream of the paleo movement. Who knows where I'll actually end up. After all, that's the beauty of a journey, right?

But you won't find much about food and health on my website because I became distracted by other projects. However, I do enjoy sharing links to articles on nutrition, health and even recipes in my Surferbird News-Links series. Eventually, I plan to write more detailed blog posts on these topics. But for now, just so you know where I stand, I don't believe one optimal diet exists that suits everyone—other than eating real food.

Another interest of mine is autism, or neurodivergence. Toward the end of spring, 2011, my youngest son's difficulties in school became more apparent, and his teacher that year didn't think a "wait and see" policy was appropriate. After the school psychologist administered copious amounts of tests, we found ourselves in the autism spectrum part of our wood, a fascinating labyrinth filled with challenges and gifts.

I'm blessed to have a child on the spectrum. He teaches us to appreciate the different ways we all experience the world, and our family has discovered more compassion for ourselves and others in the process. I haven't written much about this topic, either, but you'll find a few articles under the Essays and Stories heading. Yet, I'm excited about learning and sharing more on autism in the future.

These days, you might find me reading quantum theory and Harry Potter to a certain twelve year old, or obsessing over natural hair care. Well, I just disclosed my weakness. All of my kids (four of them total) at one point or other have said, Mom, you worry way too much about your hair - point well taken, but I just can't help it.

This section was added, February 11, 2017, to more accurately reflect the current direction of owl in the wood.

From natural home and personal care products to climate change

But one of the surprising results from starting this blog has been my growing interest in the environment and climate change. My concern about healthy personal care and home cleaning products grew to encompass the pervasive amount of plastic in our waterways. As a result, I began reading the news — a lot of news, which introduced me to the seriousness of climate change, too.

One thing led to another, and I decided I wanted to be a voice for education and change. I certainly don't claim perfection as one of my attributes. But I do hope that by my website inspires to make changes in your life that benefit our planet. Also, I hope you'll pay it forward and inspire others in return.

So, like the owl, a seeker of information, I'm always processing - pondering the big picture, such as climate change, and smaller, yet still important, concerns, such as environmentally friendly shopping bags and shampoo. I invite you to come along on this journey. All that's required is an open heart and an open mind. Welcome to my wood.
